Tormented

Tormented
As far as horror movies go, Tormented makes for some pretty uncomfortable viewing. Not because there is a lot of gratuitous blood and gore, but because it deals with the very topical issue of bullying.

As the film starts we are in a chaotic present in which something horrible has taken place. As we flash back to a funeral 5 days earlier, it soon becomes clear that no-one really cares about the deceased, and the students' wake is just an excuse for a big party.

The first death goes unreported, and it is the only clue that something is not quite right. It is not until about an hour into the movie that we are actually confronted with the undead, in the form of the zombified protagonist Darren Mullett (actor Calvin Dean) who has returned to take revenge on his tormentors. Up to that point we have been watching an hour of taunts, the kind of bullying our avenger would have been the target of. We only see it happen to him through phone movies of the attacks he endured which had been posted online to further humiliate and vilify him.

The Dogfather

The Dogfather
Children film are often not enjoyable for the masses of parents. Thankfully that can not be said of the Dogfather. It is still sugary sweet, outlandish and often times silly in a Rocky and Bullwinkle or Wily Coyote and Road Runner way. But not to the point of groin inducing why am I watching this kind of way. It does get close but these scenes are short sweet and there for the children.

Which is what this film is written for. As an Aunt and someone who never let go of their inner child this movie can have a place many parents dvd shelves as its fun and silly. The story is something straight out of a child's mind. A family of Don's has just added in a new Don and in the process of taking his acceptance speech his dog Sunny eats his prized ring. Which causes him to go a little crazy and call for his two incompetent goons to retrieve the ring.

Deep Cove / Fear Island
In horror movie culture, the perfect getaway always seems to fall through as young adults take a trip to get away from the troubles of their home to an all new problem that can be deadlier than a relaxing escape. Especially when a mysterious killer is on the loose, the race to leave this place of serenity becomes top priority over drinking and enjoying a vacation. In Michael Storey’s “Fear Island,” a senior trip for some graduating high school kids turns into their worst nightmare as a mysterious slasher preys on the members of the group, turning their vacation into an all-out killing spree.

Astro Boy

Astro Boy
Summit Entertainment has tried just a little too hard to broaden the appeal of its new computer-animated feature “Astro Boy,” liberally sprinkling the kiddie picture with references that only adults will understand. The effect is closer to Dreamworks than Pixar, however: “Astro Boy” trades subtlety and emotional development for easy gags.

A reboot of the classic Japanese anime series, “Astro Boy” does not stray too far from the original’s premise. Scientist Dr. Tenma (the voice of Nicolas Cage) is driven mad by the death of his precocious son Toby (Freddie Highmore). Determined to bring the boy back to life, he implants his son’s consciousness within a state-of-the-art robot powered by a mysterious blue ball of energy.

Chatroom
There was a time when Hideo Nakata revolutionized the horror genre with a long-haired spooky girl that crept out of a well. Thanks to The Ring, half the world discovered that there were other ways of dealing with the horror cinema besides Hollywood's way, and soon other Japanese films followed the trend. So as a long time fan of both horror and Asian movies, I was both expectant to see Chatroom, one of the latest works of Nakata, but also a little reluctant because honestly I wasn't very attracted by its premise.

Sunshine Cleaning

Sunshine Cleaning
It's not a bad idea for an indie film: Two sisters, still dealing as adults with the aftermath of their mother's suicide when they were children, are stuck in dead-end jobs. Then one of them gets the idea to stop cleaning rich people's houses for a living, and to start a business cleaning up crime scenes instead. That's the basic idea behind Christine Jeffs' Sunshine Cleaning, starring Amy Adams, Emily Blunt and Alan Arkin.

The Boy Who Cried Werewolf

The Boy Who Cried Werewolf
Nickleodeon, fresh from the smash Fred: The Movie, scores again with The Boy Who Cried Werewolf, a light spin on the classic werewolf tale starring Victoria Justice and Chase Ellison. Like Fred, Boy might not be an instant Halloween classic; however, it provides some laughs, a couple of tense moments, and even enough references for the adults out there to merit a yearly viewing.

Justice stars as Jordan Sands, a shy, awkward teenager (naturally) who longs to be different, but not too different. Ellison plays her brother Hunter, your typical younger brother who is into all things horror. Their mother has recently passed away, and their father David is busy trying to make ends meet. One day after Hunter gets suspended for another horror-related prank, he finds an envelope on the Sands family doorstep left by a mysterious man. Jordan and David think it's another prank, but after calling the number left on the envelope, it is actually a summons to visit the family castle in Romania, which has been left to them by a distant relative of their mother.

The Lost Treasure of the Grand Canyon

The Lost Treasure of the Grand Canyon
The title of this movie sounds likes it's going to be a fun, spooky ride along the lines of tween-classics such as Wanda Nevada, Escape From Witch Mountain, The Watcher in the Woods, or even Stephen Sommers' Mummy movies. It is so not. (First clue: the DVD promo proudly announces the enclosed opus is "from the producers of Sands of Oblivion and The Fallen Ones"!)

A silly story which would be much better-served with young adults in the roles and a PG-style approach, The Lost Treasure of the Grand Canyon instead follows 30-something Susan (a haggard Shannen Doherty), a treasure-hunter on a quest to locate her missing dad, an elderly tomb-raider in the person of Dr. Samuel Jordon (Duncan Fraser, maybe making a mortgage payment).

Obsessed

Obsessed
I’d like to call Obsessed a miserable failure, but that would imply this lazy waste of time had some sort of goal it failed to reach. It has nothing. No purpose, no drive, no direction. It just shiftlessly ambles forward buoyed by the assumption everyone will stop to watch a catfight, especially one involving Beyonce Knowles and Ali Larter. I did stop to soak it all in, a few million others will likely do the same, but like me, they’ll leave marveling a movie can feel so empty, useless and pathetic.
