Looking back at the Halloween of my youth, I know there was candy I looked forward to seeing in my trick-or-treat bag every year. I’m talking about candy that only showed up at Halloween time, or didn’t taste as sweet the rest of the year when it wasn’t in a convenient trick-or-treat size. Sadly, as an adult, I’ve started to discover that the candy of my memory isn’t actually all that great as all.

The movie opens with Johnny English, an inept worker at British Intelligence, having a fantasy about himself as "Agent One." In this fantasy, he successfully sneaks into a building by distracting the guard dogs with squeaky-toys, knocks out the human guards with their own guns, and then successfully seduces a black-haired beauty who tries to stop his mission by pointing a gun at him.

Just as he is about to kiss her, his fantasy is abruptly interrupted when the real Agent One walks in and asks for his papers. Johnny gives them to him, promising that he has "checked personally that the submarine hatch will open." Later, the audience hears that Agent One has died because his submarine hatch "failed to open."

The sight of Harry Potter’s chum Ron Weasley smoking, taking drugs and trying to get laid aren’t scenes from the latest film in the wizard franchise, but rather Rupert Grint making the transition from child actor to a more mature role ahead of his appearance in the last two Potter movies. It’s an astute move to give an alternative option for casting agents which sees him in a more adult role ahead of the famous series of Potter movies, and one that will appeal most to fans of the television series Skins.

When George Cukor directed his version of Claire Boothe Luce's play The Women in 1939, he stuck to its main conceit by making the entire movie a male-free zone – unless you count some sexually ambiguous lapdogs in the opening sequence. This week's remake, written and directed by Diane English, obeys the rule reverently (until its final scene), a curious choice for a film that holds womankind in such open contempt. If you don't have anything nice to say about an entire gender, why restrict your options so?

There are only two types of Christopher Walken movies: the terrible ones that are somehow watchable because of Walken’s presence, and the good ones that just happen to feature a classic Walken performance. Because Walken seemingly tries to make at least 5 movies a year, thus never turning down a script, there’s just no predicting how films like his newest, $5 A Day, will turn out.

Wes Anderson movies are the quintessential expression of everything white. The characters are tennis players, oceanographers, playwrights, psychiatrists, anthropologists, prep school students and other characteristically “white” jobs. More then that, they are all sissies and have emotional problems and dress in goofy bright colors. Yet it’s okay because Wes Anderson’s movies are magnificent. Now there is a new film in much of the same vein, just less painfully white.

In Last Night, Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington star as Joanna and Michael, a married couple living in NYC. They were college sweethearts and have been married four years. One night, they attend a dinner party where Joanna meets Michael’s beautiful new co-worker Laura (Eva Mendes). She sees the way they interact and instantly becomes jealous and suspicious. They go home later that evening and argue over the obvious question — did he, or didn’t he?

Prachya Pinkaew is largely responsible for some of the best martial arts movies in recent memory. Films like “Ong Bak”, “Tom Yum Goong” (aka “The Protector”), and “Chocolate” are full to overflowing with flying knees, spinning elbows, and basically crazy Muay Thai freaks doing insane stunts, and that’s what makes them great. His latest movie, “Elephant White”, is his first English-language feature, and has just been released direct to video.

While there are some admirable qualities (any movie that begins with an exploding motorcycle gang can’t be all bad), “Elephant White” is an underwhelming experience. Pinkaew sticks to his standard criminal underworld fare, but this film makes abundantly clear that it was his collaboration with actors like Tony Jaa, who is essentially a gnarly little stunt dude, that really made his movies stand out. This time around Pinkaew works with more veteran actors, who happen to be much less accomplished fighters, and the movie suffers for it. In a movie like this you can forgive a lot in other aspects if the action is good enough (no one is going to accuse “Ong Bak” of having the greatest story ever told). However, in the case of “Elephant White”, while the action isn’t bad, it pales in comparison to Pinkaew’s other movies.

I was just reading an article about the oddly prolonged adolescence of American males, especially those in the movies. There's a common fantasy where the guys get away from their wives and girlfriends, and escape to where they're free to guzzle beer, eat sloppily, belch, fart, leave pizza boxes on the floor, scratch their butts, watch sports on TV, and in many other ways become irresistible to hot chicks. When was the last time you saw a man under 30 in the movies who had a stable marriage, a job, children, and a life where he valued his wife above his buddies?

What can I say about Kicking The Dog the movie? Kicking the dog is classed as an Adult Comedy movie because of nudity throughout the movie. The movie itself is about a group of friends who spend one summer together, partying, drinking and having sex and fun.

The Killing is an American crime drama television series based on the Danish television series with the same English title, but known as Forbrydelsen (The Crime) in Danish. The American version was developed by Veena Sud and produced by Fox Television Studios and Fuse Entertainment. The series first season, consisting of 13, hour-long episodes, premiered on the cable channel AMC on April 3, 2011, with a two-hour premiere. On June 13, 2011, AMC ordered a second season, that will contain 13 episodes.

Milos is a former adult film star who is down on his luck financially. When he receives a call from his long-time movie actress partner, Layla, he welcomes her call. Apparently she’s heard that a new film director wants to hire Milos to star in his “artistically-designed” adult film for a very generous price. He is easily lured form his semi-retirement by the lucrative offer, agreeing to meet the director in an isolated mansion.

The good news? Two of Asia's biggest action superstars have teamed up for the first time. The bad news? It's 15 years too late. And what's with the white kid?

The Forbidden Kingdom is yet another picture in which we are meant to experience an exotic locale peopled entirely by "others" through the eyes of a Caucasian character. In this case, it's a fantasy world cobbled together from classic Chinese literature and period martial arts movies. As the latest entry in the category of "low expectation, Asian-themed, English-language movies written and directed by respectful American creative talent," the film is slightly above average entertainment. But I grow tired of having to lower my expectations in exchange for the pleasure of seeing talented Asian performers make an appearance on the big screen in America.
