The Spy Next Door
It's sad to see legends get old. As this generation of geeks raised on 1980's action movies advances in years, so do the actors we used to idolize. Some embrace it while others drop gracefully out of the spotlight. Others still refuse to let go, appearing in second-rate reality TV programs or direct-to-DVD action retreads. Some even run for public office. But when The Spy Next Door opens with a credit sequence filled with some of Jackie Chan's finest stunts from past films – all set to "Secret Agent Man," no less – it's hard not to compare the young, agile martial artist with the much older, much slower figure who appears on-screen directly after.

“I wish I had friends,” laments 11-year-old Toe Thompson (Jimmy Bennett), a picked-on kid with a mouth full of metal and a ZIP code full of weirdos. Toe’s lack of companionship, however, has less to do with his orthodontist than with the peculiarities of his suburban neighborhood: the ominously named Black Falls, home to Black Box Industries and locus of excessive looniness.

Kites

Kites
Bollywood enters telenovela territory in a hybrid film that takes the heightened emotions, wild tonal ranges and impeccably crisp technique of modern Hindi cinema and puts all that in the service of a tragic love story straight out of Mexican TV. It's perfectly entertaining and lovely to look at, but Kites is not what most audiences think of when they think Bollywood—which despite that industry's wide spectrum and deep output is generally synonymous with lush, opulent musicals set in almost mystically beautiful locales and running at least two-and-three-quarter hours. A romantic melodrama with as much English and Spanish as Hindi, just one dance number—set at a dance contest and so not inherently signifying "movie musical"—and clocking in at just over two hours, Kites does carry one distinguishing feature of Bollywood film: the primacy of fate.

Bad Company

Dignified Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins tries the buddy action-comedy on for size with this typically slick and bombastic offering from producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Hopkins stars as Gaylord Oakes, a CIA spy attempting -- along with his partner, Kevin Pope (Chris Rock) -- to secure a suitcase-sized nuclear bomb in Prague from a Russian black marketer (Peter Stormare). Just as the partners discover that another bidder for the device exists, they are ambushed and Pope is killed trying to protect Oakes.

Break Ke Baad

Break Ke Baad
With Break Ke Baad, I’m officially instituting the two and three- quarter star rating on our show. This is for films, which show promise and sparkle but eventually don’t deliver the goods.

Break Ke Baad, co-written and directed by debutant Danish Aslam, starts off well enough. Over a long title sequence, we are introduced to Abhay, played by Imran Khan and Aaliya, played by Deepika Padukone, both Hindi movie fanatics who share their first kiss during their third viewing of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

She’s gorgeous, headstrong and sometimes insensitive or as she puts it during a drunken interlude, she is a soaring kite and he is her strong manjha. Which means he is sincere, committed and pretty dull.

Surf's Up

Surf's Up
I was somewhat surprised by Surf's Up, which is better than you might think from the trailers. It's very much a movie for children, without much to capture the interest of adults, but there are so many subpar movies for kids these days that it's refreshing to see one that entertains in an almost classic fashion. The filmmakers behind Surf's Up were obviously aiming for a timeless family movie, something kids 10 years in the future could watch and still enjoy, although by then the animation might be considered dated in some way.

Get Smart

Get Smart
During the opening of Get Smart, the new big-screen re-visitation of the '60s spy spoof TV show created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, we're shown a montage detailing the mighty workings of the modern intelligence apparatus; covert microphones, satellite communications intercepts, frantic translation, secretive meetings. As top analyst Maxwell Smart (Steve Carell) walks the streets of Washington to the hidden headquarters of the secret agency where he works, listening to intercepted conversations to better understand the plans and thoughts of America's enemies, his iPod switches over ... to Abba's "Take a Chance on Me." Spies, it seems, are people too.

New Kids Turbo

New Kids Turbo
Sketch comedy can be a right royal pain to translate into a full-length feature film, but anyone who wants to try it could do worse than take a long, good look at what makes the Dutch film "New Kids Turbo" so ridiculously successful. And I do mean ridiculous: mere weeks after "Sint" broke Dutch ticket-sales records, these got run over again by "New Kids Turbo". Extra prints needed to be made in a hurry, cinema schedules changed and a foreign bidding war started on this film. Fast food restaurants now sell the "knoepert" which is a snack based on a New Kids recipe, and even a fireworks line was launched (haha) featuring the heads of the actors on its boxes.
