Tormented
#1 | Movie Reviews

As far as horror movies go, Tormented makes for some pretty uncomfortable viewing. Not because there is a lot of gratuitous blood and gore, but because it deals with the very topical issue of bullying.
As the film starts we are in a chaotic present in which something horrible has taken place. As we flash back to a funeral 5 days earlier, it soon becomes clear that no-one really cares about the deceased, and the students' wake is just an excuse for a big party.
The first death goes unreported, and it is the only clue that something is not quite right. It is not until about an hour into the movie that we are actually confronted with the undead, in the form of the zombified protagonist Darren Mullett (actor Calvin Dean) who has returned to take revenge on his tormentors. Up to that point we have been watching an hour of taunts, the kind of bullying our avenger would have been the target of. We only see it happen to him through phone movies of the attacks he endured which had been posted online to further humiliate and vilify him.

It's been several months since we've seen any new images from Daniel Radcliffe's upcoming non-Potter movie, The Woman in Black, but now a new still from the supernatural thriller has been released online.
Jane Eyre

A trailer for a new adaptation of Emily Brontë's Jane Eyre has debuted online and promises a "bold new vision" of the classic story. Director Cary Fukunaga (Sin Nombre) explained to Movieline in March how he planned to make his version of Jane Eyre different from previous adaptations.
The Dogfather

Children film are often not enjoyable for the masses of parents. Thankfully that can not be said of the Dogfather. It is still sugary sweet, outlandish and often times silly in a Rocky and Bullwinkle or Wily Coyote and Road Runner way. But not to the point of groin inducing why am I watching this kind of way. It does get close but these scenes are short sweet and there for the children.
Which is what this film is written for. As an Aunt and someone who never let go of their inner child this movie can have a place many parents dvd shelves as its fun and silly. The story is something straight out of a child's mind. A family of Don's has just added in a new Don and in the process of taking his acceptance speech his dog Sunny eats his prized ring. Which causes him to go a little crazy and call for his two incompetent goons to retrieve the ring.
Jackass 2.5

When it was announced that Paramount Pictures and MTV would be making the latest offering from Johnny Knoxville & Co. available for free download, I was intrigued. It was an interesting way to promote a movie, and I certainly wanted to check it out for my review. Unfortunately, I was caught in the middle of a winter storm and my internet was knocked out all weekend. Lucky for me (and you), I received a copy of Jackass 2.5 in the mail, so I was able to watch it after all.
The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon

Straight-up you should know, this is my favorite short film of ALL TIME! It's absolutely hysterical and simply amazing. Every time I am in a bad mood or down, I stick on this short film and it automatically cheers me up.

The Hunt For Gollum

The fan-created Lord of the Rings prequel, available today for free viewing at DailyMotion.com, has benefited from terrific buzz, mostly due to a couple of impressive trailers released earlier this year.
Those trailers didn’t lie. This thing pretty much sings.
The A-Team

Fans of the A-Team TV series will want to know whether the new movie version is faithful to it -- which is to say they're hoping the film is cheesy, preposterous, and brimming with catchphrases. And it is. Mission accomplished there. But while that kind of corny entertainment is fun when you're 12 years old and it's on TV, for free, we usually have different standards when it comes to movies, especially now that we are adults and movie tickets are expensive. We realize now that someone saying "I love it when a plan comes together" while chomping a cigar is not, by itself, automatically awesome.
Obsessed
#1 | Movie Reviews

I’d like to call Obsessed a miserable failure, but that would imply this lazy waste of time had some sort of goal it failed to reach. It has nothing. No purpose, no drive, no direction. It just shiftlessly ambles forward buoyed by the assumption everyone will stop to watch a catfight, especially one involving Beyonce Knowles and Ali Larter. I did stop to soak it all in, a few million others will likely do the same, but like me, they’ll leave marveling a movie can feel so empty, useless and pathetic.
Where the Wild Things Are

One of the strangest moments in Wes Anderson’s recent Fantastic Mr Fox — like Where The Wild Things Are, a classic children’s story repurposed for adults — comes towards the end of the film. The fox and his rapscallion chums have, after much suffering and with a great deal of guile and effort, managed to escape the clutches of the angry farmers who seek to kill them. They’re pegging it down a rural lane when, off in the distance, they spot a single wolf. They stare it for what seems like an eternity, transfixed by its isolation and also its dark beauty. The wolf is lonely, but free too. Wild, yet somehow hungering for company. The moment passes. The anticry resumes.
Detention

Ah, the prank. Where would horror movies be without it? From Prom Night, Terror Train to Sorority Row, the prank gone bad has not only been a staple in the horror genre, it has also cost the lives of countless young adults. Prank gone bad horror movies basically fall into two categories. The first has the pranksters falling victim to the killer, the movie usually taking place a few years after the deed. The second type can be called “sins of the father” as the victims have no idea why they are being hunted and killed until they realize too late that mommy or daddy did some very bad things in the past. Our movie falls into this second category.
Surf's Up

I was somewhat surprised by Surf's Up, which is better than you might think from the trailers. It's very much a movie for children, without much to capture the interest of adults, but there are so many subpar movies for kids these days that it's refreshing to see one that entertains in an almost classic fashion. The filmmakers behind Surf's Up were obviously aiming for a timeless family movie, something kids 10 years in the future could watch and still enjoy, although by then the animation might be considered dated in some way.
House of Bones

Corin Nemec (Mansquito, SS Doomtrooper) co-stars alongside Charisma Carpenter (The Expendables, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as TV ghost hunters that enter a reportedly haunted house that may prove to be the death of them in the SyFy Original "House of Bones" directed by Jeffery Scott Lando who also is responsible for the SyFy Original film "Goblin" which is the first and up until now only SyFy Original to receive a good review from The Liberal Dead, perhaps it's time to place Mr. Lando on my directors to watch radar.
Deep Cove / Fear Island
#1 | Movie Reviews

In horror movie culture, the perfect getaway always seems to fall through as young adults take a trip to get away from the troubles of their home to an all new problem that can be deadlier than a relaxing escape. Especially when a mysterious killer is on the loose, the race to leave this place of serenity becomes top priority over drinking and enjoying a vacation. In Michael Storey’s “Fear Island,” a senior trip for some graduating high school kids turns into their worst nightmare as a mysterious slasher preys on the members of the group, turning their vacation into an all-out killing spree.
