Wrong Turn at Tahoe

Wrong Turn at Tahoe
In his first movie, “P2”, Franck Khalfoun created a decently crafted, low-budget, direct-to-video thriller that caught some people’s attention, at least enough attention to land names like Cuba Gooding Jr., Harvey Keitel, and Miguel Ferrar for his second movie “Wrong Turn at Tahoe”. Okay, Miguel Ferrer may not be a huge catch, but he’s still rad.

Joshua (Gooding Jr.) collects outstanding debts for the mob, and tells you early on that all he has to live for is revenge. He is calm and level headed about his duties, while his partner Mickey (Johnny Messner) prefers to slap his victims around. Joshua, in his surface tranquility, winds up being the most intimidating of the two. He isn’t going to scream at you or rough you up, and he won’t enjoy fucking you up. This isn’t personal, this is business, this is his job. But that won’t stop him from burning the bottom of your feet with a hotplate.

As Good as Dead

As Good as Dead
Movie Reviews this week looks at the dark drama As Good As Dead. This is a very surreal movie starring Cary Elwes (Liar Liar) and the much loved Andie Macdowell (Four Weddings and a Funeral) as Ethan Belfrage and Helen Kalahan respectively, it also stars the stalwart Brian Cox (X-Men 2) as Reverend Kalahan.

We join the movie as Reverend Kalahan preaches to his congregation, at first glance it seems just like a normal church service, with the preacher speaking to his congregation about becoming shepherds, but as the camera pans across the audience and the surroundings in the church, you notice Swastikas, and Nazi symbols, not to mention some of the congregation could easily be taken for Neo-Nazis. As Kalahan continues to preach, it pans to his wife, who is looking on admirably, as Kalahan speaks; a member of the congregation gets up, as if the words of Kalahan had triggered something in him, we find out later that he went off and killed several immigrants in a bus, in an unprovoked rampage before shooting himself.

Prison Break-4

Prison Break-4
The fourth season of Prison Break is here. It premiered with its first two episodes, "Scylla" and "Breaking and Entering," and seems to be all set for another season of action peppered with conspiracy theories and spiced with thoughts of revenge. That said, I am not sure the name Prison Break really applies anymore, how far can this concept be taken before it has run its course? Do not get me wrong, I am a fan of the show and I like the characters, I just think that it may be time to perhaps think about making a spin-off featuring the primaries and called something else. Well, that is neither here nor there. On to the premiere.

Awake

Awake
The tagline for Awake (and the opening text screens) informs the viewer that every year one in 700 people wake up during surgery. That doesn’t mean they actually wake up, screaming from the agony of having an open chest or gushing wounds from some horrible accident. Instead Awake deals with a condition known as Anesthesia Awareness. The person is physically frozen while their consciousness is still awake and alert. They can’t move, but they can hear and feel the world around them.

Alice in Wonderland
Last time someone thought Tim Burton and his source material was a match made in heaven things weren’t as scrumdiddlyumptious as we’d hoped. While it definitely stayed true to its roots, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory made one leave the theater not quite as satisfied as you’d hope. However, everyone was proven wrong when naysayers believed that he was also the wrong choice for the film adaptation of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Pig Hunt

Pig Hunt
I was sitting next to a woman on an airplane when the conversation turned to pig hunting. She wanted to move back home to Washington D.C. but her husband really wanted to stay in Augusta, Georgia. I asked her what was in Augusta that her husband liked so much. "Well, he hunts wild pigs on the weekend." Really I said. I had no idea you could hunt pigs. They seemed very domesticated to me. "Oh, the pigs in the woods can kill you," she said. I asked her what kind of gun her husband used to hunt pigs. She looked at me like I was a complete idiot. "You don't use a gun to hunt pigs." Oh, so what does he use? "He uses a knife", she said. A knife? "Yes, a knife. He waits in the bushes until the pig gets real close. Then he jumps on their back and stabs them in the neck." OK, I said. This woman will never convince her husband to give up Augusta. When you're a man's man who slits pig's throats in the woods for fun, Washington DC just won't have the same appeal.

The King of Fighters

The King of Fighters
The premise of The King of Fighters shows a secret tournament that is held in some alternate dimension in which fighters from around the world “log in” to via special earpieces. Based off the hit video game, I am sure fans of the video game will be let down by the fact that this film is a total chore to sit through. Sean Faris who is the lead, is a terrible actor. How laughable is it that his character’s name is Kyo Kusanagi and he is a white boy? The story follows him and tells the tale of the tournament. The characters for this series are not only unrealistic but entirely wrong, for example anyone who’s ever seen any of the Fatal Fury series knows that Terry Bogard is not portrayed in the game like he is in this movie.
