Tormented
#1 | Movie Reviews

As far as horror movies go, Tormented makes for some pretty uncomfortable viewing. Not because there is a lot of gratuitous blood and gore, but because it deals with the very topical issue of bullying.
As the film starts we are in a chaotic present in which something horrible has taken place. As we flash back to a funeral 5 days earlier, it soon becomes clear that no-one really cares about the deceased, and the students' wake is just an excuse for a big party.
The first death goes unreported, and it is the only clue that something is not quite right. It is not until about an hour into the movie that we are actually confronted with the undead, in the form of the zombified protagonist Darren Mullett (actor Calvin Dean) who has returned to take revenge on his tormentors. Up to that point we have been watching an hour of taunts, the kind of bullying our avenger would have been the target of. We only see it happen to him through phone movies of the attacks he endured which had been posted online to further humiliate and vilify him.

Chatroom

There was a time when Hideo Nakata revolutionized the horror genre with a long-haired spooky girl that crept out of a well. Thanks to The Ring, half the world discovered that there were other ways of dealing with the horror cinema besides Hollywood's way, and soon other Japanese films followed the trend. So as a long time fan of both horror and Asian movies, I was both expectant to see Chatroom, one of the latest works of Nakata, but also a little reluctant because honestly I wasn't very attracted by its premise.

Hanna
#1 | Movie Reviews

One online review compares Hanna, the new actioner by Joe Wright (Atonement), to the story of "Little Red Riding Hood," a rather facile analogy based on the appearance of a giant Big Bad Wolf's head at a Grimm's Fairy Tale-themed amusement park in the film. But one need only look at the film's eponymous albino heroine to see that the more apt analogy is to Grimm's "Snow White." Like in that story, a heroine must initially depend on the protection of a huntsman in order to evade an evil stepmother who plots to kill her. Where it differs is that the self-reliant Hanna (Saoirse Ronan) never needs a dashing prince to rush to her rescue. She, instead, capitalizes on the survivalist education imparted to her by a rogue spy, Erik Heller (Eric Bana), in order to outmaneuver her pursuer, Marissa Wiegler (Cate Blanchett), a lethal CIA operative who holds the key to Hanna's genesis.
Kick-Ass

Crafting a successful superhero movie is easier said than done. The best of the genre -- and Christopher Nolan's Batman movies immediately spring to mind -- take what in some quarters could be considered ridiculous and turn it into the sublime. Respecting audience and source material in equal measure, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight entertained, provoked thought, garnered critical acclaim, and pulled in a fortune at the box office. One false move can result in just the plain ridiculous, however, and from Condorman to Catwoman, movie history is littered with such expensive miss-fires.
Bedtime Stories
#1 | Movie Reviews

It sounds like a can't-miss concept: a Disney movie about a guy who tells wonderful, fantastic bedtime stories that actually come true in real life. And when the guy is Adam Sandler, how can this possibly be a bad movie? Aren't you buying tickets online for your entire family right now, even as you read about this possible cinematic land of delights? Except that watching Bedtime Stories is about as delightful as peeking into your Christmas stocking and finding it empty except for a few lint-covered peppermints.
Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son

Once upon a time Martin Lawrence was funny. A scary thought but the evidence is all there online. His stand-up was genuinely entertaining and he showed promise in translating that for the big screen with the mid 90′s hit Bad Boys but since then, his career has descended deeper and deeper into a hole from which I doubt he will ever emerge.
Postal
#1 | Movie Reviews

The film takes place in the town of Paradise, Arizona, where the volatile Postal Dude (Zack Ward), after being mocked at a job interview, kicked out of his local unemployment office and discovering that his morbidly obese wife is cheating on him, is more than a little angry and is desperate to get enough cash to finally leave his dead-end town. He decides to team up with his Uncle Dave (Dave Foley), a slovenly con artist turned doomsday cult leader who owes the US government over a million dollars in back-taxes. With the help of Uncle Dave's right hand man Richie (Chris Coppola) and an army of big-breasted, scantily clad cult members, the Dude devises a plan to hijack a shipment of 2,000 Krotchy Dolls, a rare, sought-after plush toy resembling a giant scrotum. Uncle Dave plans to sell them online, where their prices have reached as high as $4,000 a doll.
Jack Goes Boating

Hello again, friends. Times are tight for most as of late. The papers and the government pontificate about the economy stabilizing, and in some cases improving. Well, possibly, but most people that I know are changing their movie watching habits and straying away from the Cineplexes. They’re getting comfy on their couches after plundering the vast recesses of online video stores like Netflix and automated services such as Redbox, located outside of their local convenience stores.
This being the case, I am starting to write more often about movies that you can find at these outlets. Movies, in most cases, that were released a while ago straight to the DVD market, the hidden gems of independent cinema.
