The King of Fighters
The premise of The King of Fighters shows a secret tournament that is held in some alternate dimension in which fighters from around the world “log in” to via special earpieces. Based off the hit video game, I am sure fans of the video game will be let down by the fact that this film is a total chore to sit through. Sean Faris who is the lead, is a terrible actor. How laughable is it that his character’s name is Kyo Kusanagi and he is a white boy? The story follows him and tells the tale of the tournament. The characters for this series are not only unrealistic but entirely wrong, for example anyone who’s ever seen any of the Fatal Fury series knows that Terry Bogard is not portrayed in the game like he is in this movie.

Burke and Hare

Burke and Hare
Churning death and murder into comedic gold requires a special touch, something which director John Landis lacks. Once upon a time Landis was a comedy king, with The Blues Brothers, Animal House and An American Werewolf in London highlights in his 30+ year career. But in Burke & Hare it is clear that Landis has little to offer the current cinematic landscape.

It is a pity, since the exploits of William Burke and William Hare are worth exploring. Set in 1828 Edinburgh, during an era of medical enlightenment, Burke (Simon Pegg) and Hare (Andy Serkis) hatch an entrepreneurial venture by providing fresh cadavers to the medical establishment, who are in need of human corpses to dissect and study in the name of science.

 Dolan's Cadillac
Stephen King is one of the most popular authors in the world. Many of his stories have been turned into movies. Some of those have been really good (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) and some have been really bad (Sleepwalkers, Graveyard Shift) The newest King story turned into a movie is the direct-to-DVD release Dolan’s Cadillac.

It is based on a short story by the same name in King’s 1993 collection of short stories Nightmares and Dreamscapes.

Somewhere

Somewhere
The last time we caught Sofia Coppola, she was considering the boredom of being queen in Marie Antoinette (2006), which was a red rag of woven silk to her detractors. Insular, they cry. Nothing to say.

Little in Somewhere, her latest portrait of cloistered celebrity, will silence this brigade – it’s about a bedraggled Hollywood action hunk called Johnny Marco, played with sheepish charm by Stephen Dorff, and the many ways in which he fritters away his time. He’s half-asleep in his Chateau Marmont hotel room, while two pole-dancing twins perform funny, coy routines at the end of his bed, unsure when they should pack up. On every balcony, there’s a budding actress beckoning, which is a problem when Johnny’s tweenage daughter Cleo (Elle Fanning, assured and delightful) wants to spend time with him, visiting by surprise.

The Other Boleyn Girl

The Other Boleyn Girl
Corset dramas are usually the stuff of gooey, doe-eyed romances against the odds or in the midst of war. The Other Boleyn Girl tries something a little different with the pretty dresses genre and gives us a costumed political procedural in which a women are traded like baby-birthing poker chips and a king is only as good as his libido.

Scooby-Doo And The Goblin King
Don't mess with the formula that's fueled this popular franchise for decades. Don't turn it into a generic mish-mash. Don't . . .

Oops. Too late. Joe Sichta, who also wrote, directed, and produced "Scooby-Doo and the Loch Ness Monster" (2004), "Scooby-Doo in Where's My Mummy?" (2005), and "Chill Out, Scooby-Doo!" (2007), has taken the mystery structure out of the franchise and replaced it with a kitchen-sink production that's more silliness than sleuthing.

Let’s get something straight about 300 right off the bat. This is not a movie about brave rebels fighting against some oppressive regime to safeguard freedom and democracy. When King Leonidas shouts “For freedom!” he’s not talking about truth, justice, and the American way. It’s mostly just jargon tossed into the trailers and the film for dim, easily manipulated people who get overly excited when they hear propaganda thrown around, you know, the type who aren’t big on paying attention to context. Telling your soldiers they’re fighting to be free men right before they march to their deaths to defend your right to sit on a throne and sleep with a hot queen is also a great way to energize the troops, even if it doesn’t mean anything. I’m sure the Taliban soldiers were told they were fighting for freedom too. In their case it was the freedom to tie their women up in the street and throw rocks.

The Pagan Queen

The Pagan Queen
Is there something in the air, say, the stench of death and decline of empire, to have inspired the recent spate of films about imperial power? Fashionistas of course are already worshiping at the altar of “Marie Antoinette,” with its title bubblehead and hollow charms, while Forest Whitaker devotees are savoring the outré venality of Idi Amin in the rather too enthusiastically entertaining “Last King of Scotland.” Those who think more crowned heads should have rolled in the 18th century, in the meantime, can cozy up to “The Queen,” a sublimely nimble evisceration of that cult of celebrity known as the British royal family. (It opens the New York Film Festival tonight at Lincoln Center and in theaters tomorrow.)
