En tu ausencia

En Tu Ausencia ( In your absence ) is a movie I have heard a lot about before getting a change to get a hold on the DVD and watch it for myself. I have heard all kinds of rumors about it -- being the ultimate coming of age movie , powerful tale ,provocative scenes…etc. At the end when I saw it I was mostly impressed with the nature shots and felt a bit disappointed . The whole movie feels more like a reportage than a film in itself -- either that or a documentary. Add the surrealism and beautiful visuals and you have a perfect arty festival film- which however won`t be understood by everyone and don`t really have a chance for a commercial success .
Jackass 3.5

As reported last month, there was enough unused material Jackass 3D to create a new movie and Johnny Knoxville and company plan to do just that. It does not specify which digital platforms will have the film (eg iTunes, Xbox Live, etc.).The press release does not mention pricing for the segments of the week or the total package. According to the press release, the plan is to have “new tricks and antics of Jackass 3.5 released online a week and then packaged together as a feature film digitally distributed followed by other platforms including home video. Paramount plans to launch in March 2011 Jackass 5.3 to the digital version.

Jack Goes Boating

Hello again, friends. Times are tight for most as of late. The papers and the government pontificate about the economy stabilizing, and in some cases improving. Well, possibly, but most people that I know are changing their movie watching habits and straying away from the Cineplexes. They’re getting comfy on their couches after plundering the vast recesses of online video stores like Netflix and automated services such as Redbox, located outside of their local convenience stores.
This being the case, I am starting to write more often about movies that you can find at these outlets. Movies, in most cases, that were released a while ago straight to the DVD market, the hidden gems of independent cinema.
Tormented
#1 | Movie Reviews

As far as horror movies go, Tormented makes for some pretty uncomfortable viewing. Not because there is a lot of gratuitous blood and gore, but because it deals with the very topical issue of bullying.
As the film starts we are in a chaotic present in which something horrible has taken place. As we flash back to a funeral 5 days earlier, it soon becomes clear that no-one really cares about the deceased, and the students' wake is just an excuse for a big party.
The first death goes unreported, and it is the only clue that something is not quite right. It is not until about an hour into the movie that we are actually confronted with the undead, in the form of the zombified protagonist Darren Mullett (actor Calvin Dean) who has returned to take revenge on his tormentors. Up to that point we have been watching an hour of taunts, the kind of bullying our avenger would have been the target of. We only see it happen to him through phone movies of the attacks he endured which had been posted online to further humiliate and vilify him.

Chatroom

There was a time when Hideo Nakata revolutionized the horror genre with a long-haired spooky girl that crept out of a well. Thanks to The Ring, half the world discovered that there were other ways of dealing with the horror cinema besides Hollywood's way, and soon other Japanese films followed the trend. So as a long time fan of both horror and Asian movies, I was both expectant to see Chatroom, one of the latest works of Nakata, but also a little reluctant because honestly I wasn't very attracted by its premise.

30 Days of Night: Dark Days
#1 | Movie Reviews

The original 30 Days Of Night was a superbly executed vampire movie classic, it had all the hallmarks of an original classic, although based on a collection of graphic novels, the content of the movie was very much a faithful adaptation and whilst this second movie offering was a straight to DVD movie with a slightly smaller budget, it was actually quite good and it continued off from where the last one left off.
Lost Boys: The Tribe

It’s been a long, long, long, long time since I saw the original Lost Boys, the Kiefer Sutherland/Corey Haim/Corey Feldman-starring vampire cult classic. I recall enjoying it and that it took place in Santa Clara, but considering that I was five when it was originally released, I never quite got on the Lost Boys bandwagon, or the “two Coreys” bandwagon for that matter. Nevertheless, Lost Boys: The Tribe arrived in stores last week with much more excitement than the typical direct-to-DVD release.
Cinderella II: Dreams Come True
#1 | Movie Reviews

Cinderella II: Dreams Come True was a direct-to-DVD sequel released in 2002. Many Disney purists held their noses when this DVD was originally released, but a lot of parents (and grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.) bought it for kids who loved the character and didn’t care about the lower level of animation, storytelling, or music the sequel presented. Disney stopped selling it by 2004, but where there is money to be made, the Mouse House never scruples to keep a product from the paying public. The current “Special Edition” hits the shelves just in time for Christmas. Two words if you’re too lazy to read the whole review: AVOID IT.
Love Lies Bleeding
#1 | Movie Reviews

Love Lies Bleeding is a movie that was directed by Keith Samples; perhaps you caught Single White Female 2: The Psycho? In this movie Samples eye for detail follows a young couple down on their luck, who then find a bag of money, which ultimately brings them bad luck since they must now run from the crooked DEA agent who needs the moolah. Insert Christian Slater as the crooked DEA agent and you've got what sounds like the premise of a strong straight to DVD flick.
