High School Musical

Though the story has familiar elements (Romeo and Juliet, character going against what he’s expected to be) High School Musical obviously makes connections with its audience. Now, the Disney Channel massive hit comes to DVD. The show is also being taken on the road with a new High School Musical Concert Tour. Click here to read more about it.
High School Musical 2

I know at least six full-grown women who love Grease 2. I also know two women and one gay man who adore Xanadu. Hell, I know one lunatic who thinks The Wiz is better than The Wizard of Oz. And I'm certainly not immune: You know that live-action Popeye musical? I love it. So it seems that just about every movie fan has some weird taste in musicals every once in a while. Which brings us to the out-of-nowhere phenomenon hit that became a global virus a few years back when "just another" made-for-Disney Channel movie debuted ... and became that hottest kiddie sensation since, like, The Cabbage Patch Kids. (Yeah, I'm old.)
Fame
#1 | Movie Reviews

The differences between the original version of "Fame" and the splashy new production reveal a great deal about the changes in the movie business over the last three decades. Alan Parker's "Fame," released in 1980, retained some of the hallmarks of edgy movies of the '70s. Tackling subjects like racial conflict and homosexuality, it had a gritty urban flavor melded to high-powered musical numbers. The retooled version, directed by young music video wiz Kevin Tancharoen, apes "High School Musical" rather than "Mean Streets." Rated PG, it's almost laughably bland and watered-down in its desire to appeal to the widest possible audience. It won't succeed in that goal, but it has enough pizzazz to captivate undemanding tweeners.

The French Kissers (Les Beaux Gosses)

Ah! the tender years of high school: hanging out where your best buddies while hoping you'll finally find a girl who'll take away your virginity and calm all your flaming testosterone for good. Boy did it sucked !
Described by many as the Belgian Superbad, Riad Sattouf's Les Beaux Gosses is easily the best teen comedy of the year. With its realistic approach to the genre, the result is a very funny comedy that also shows adolescence with a veracity we rarely see on the screen.
3:10 to Yuma

Is it my imagination, or have the movies gone into the Wayback Machine and come out in the late 1950s? Genres thought dead and moldering in their film canisters are suddenly back on their feet. ‘‘Hairspray,’’ ‘‘Once,’’ and even Disney’s ‘‘High School Musical’’ have revived the musical, and now the classic western is getting a reboot. Early buzz on ‘‘The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford’’ is building well in advance of its October release; until then, we’ll have to be content with the lean, almost absurdly satisfying ‘‘3:10 to Yuma.’’
The Cell 2

The Cell 2 is an amazing film. Not because it’s good or anything like that, because it isn’t. Far from good, in fact: it’s an absolute piece of shit if you’re really dying to know. No, the amazing feat about The Cell 2 is that it is credited as having four screenwriters — and not one of them had what the common sense to fill in some of the story’s numerous plot holes.
I vaguely recall watching the first Cell film back in 2000. I don’t remember much, other than the fact that I thought it was rather silly and mostly forgettable (and obviously the latter was true since I, well, don’t remember). However, as bad as the original Jennifer Lopez vehicle was, it could not be anywhere near as terrible as The Cell 2.

Hairspray
#1 | Movie Reviews

film, lovingly adapted from the Broadway musical, preserves the inclusive, celebratory spirit of John Waters’s 1988 movie, in which bigger-boned, darker-skinned and otherwise different folk take exuberant revenge on the bigots and the squares who conspire to keep them down. The surprise may be that this “Hairspray,” stuffed with shiny showstoppers, Kennedy-era Baltimore beehives and a heavily padded John Travolta in drag, is actually good.
