Two basic dramatic approaches to fatness are to regard it as comic, or tragic. Anne Bancroft has somehow avoided both approaches in "Fatso," a movie with the unique distinction of creating in its audiences an almost constant suspense about how they're supposed to be reacting. The movie itself just doesn't know: "Fatso" has a director, a screenplay and a cast who are all uncertain about how they really feel about overweight.

Who could have guessed that this mild, amiable and rather forgettable comedy would smash box-office records in its native France? When it was released in February of this year, Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis became an instant smash among French cinemagoers, and has subsequently roared towards the decade-long box-office crown that James Cameron's Titanic has held in that country. Such a success can only be attributed to the way Dany Boon's film touches upon national stereotypes and prejudices. Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis is based around the perception that life in the south of France is nothing much gorgeous sunshine and happiness, while the north of the country is a cold and miserable place to be; but Boon, a native of Nord-Pas de Calais, wants to show us that things aren't as grim up north as many might think.

What do you get when you combine an old frontier town with modern looking alien-like earth creatures? If you guessed “High plains Invaders” your in the right review.

Director Kristoffer Tabori and writer Richard Beattie have a soft spot for Sci-Fi westerns which is obvious in this fantastical and yet absurd ode to the intertwining of genres. Though let’s not forget that there is still enough blood shed, SYFY channel gore in this to keep its alien head in the horror genre as well. Speaking of horror …James Marsters former Buffy star “Spike” is on board in a lead role. Though looking better without the whiteface.

Sex Drive is a raunchy road trip comedy that comes with a few surprises, though probably not the ones the filmmakers intended. It's no surprise that the movie goes for sweet romance near the end, or that its characters says endlessly filthy things to each other for an hour and a half. All that is par for the course in the comedy world that Judd Apatow has created in his image. The actual surprises come sporadically throughout the movie, when a joke hits just right, the story takes the perfect turn, and you'll find yourself, against your will, laughing out loud.

No year could be considered complete without the obligatory cop-family/friend drama, cast with seasoned actors. We Own the Night, takes the spot this year and is Sony Pictures late push for an Oscar bid.

It stars Joaquin Phoenix as Bobby Green, the manager of a Russian mob owned hot spot, El Caribe. He also happens to be the son of Burt Grusinsky (Robert Duvall) and the brother of Joseph Grusinsky (Mark Wahlberg), both of whom are employed by the New York Police Department. And, no shocker here, they disapprove of the freewheeling lifestyle he lives and dislike his Puerto Rican girlfriend Amada Juarez (Eva Mendes). As events progress badly for them, they come to the realization that family honor is all they really have and everything must be done to preserve it.

Movies and video games have something of a love/hate relationship. The film industry loves to make movies out of videogames, which gamers inevitably hate. But Scott Pilgrim is different. Now, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World isn’t based on a videogame, it’s based on the geek chic comic book series of the same name. But like the comic, director Edgar Wright’s (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and the upcoming Ant-Man) adaptation is steeped both structurally and aesthetically in the videogame tradition that Generation Y (or Millennials, or whatever the hell old people call us these days) grew up with.

I was hopeful. After all the cover art made the movie look promising and I figured it was going to be this little gem of a movie that we will be chatting up all week long.

Obviously you can tell from my preamble that this was far from the case.

I probably spent the first 20 minutes laughing at the stupidity of this movie before we finally turned it off. The acting was terrible, the set, the design, the dialogue.. everything about this film was awful. You take medieval peasant type people, send them off into the wildnerness doomed to wander all the days of their lives because of some curse and they do it too... in sparkling white shirts and bold green and read skirts. Their faces are dirty but their clothes are a walking advertisment for Medieval Tide.
